When it comes to choosing a family-friendly Chevrolet SUV, you have lots of options. Depending on the size of your family and how much cargo space you need, consider either the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer or the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox. Let’s take a look at these two popular SUVs and do a side-by-side comparison so you can decide which one best suits your lifestyle.

Trims and Exterior Styling

The sub-compact crossover Trailblazer comes in five trims, the L, LS, LT, sporty ACTIV, and the top-tier RS. With an overall length of 173.5 inches, the Trailblazer makes maneuvering through city traffic and parking in challenging spots a breeze. With an aggressive front grille, angular LED headlights, and a dropped fascia, the Trailblazer has an athletic look that’s sure to turn heads.

You’ll notice the Trailblazer’s wide rear stance, contoured body panels, and rear taillights that stand out from the rest of the body. When you choose the ACTIVE or RS trim, the Trailblazer comes with a modern-looking two-tone roof with rails that give it an extra sporty look.

The Equinox offers four trims: the L, LS, LT, and the luxury-oriented Premier. The Equinox’s length of 183.1 inches lets you and your family carry more supplies, sports equipment, and luggage. Sleek lines, an elegant front grille, and aerodynamic lines help to give the Equinox a sophisticated appearance. Choose the limited Midnight Edition when you want 19-inch gloss black aluminum wheels, black accents, and a black front grille that helps to elevate the exterior of the Equinox.

Engines and Performance

Depending on the Trailblazer trim, you have two engine options. First up is a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder that delivers 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The second option is a more powerful turbocharged 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine that produces 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Both engines pair with a smooth-shifting continuously variable transmission.

Front-wheel drive comes standard across the Chevrolet Trailblazer trims and if you want more traction, choose the available all-wheel-drive-system. You’ll enjoy how well the Trailblazer handles with its enhanced suspension system that helps to absorb road bumps for a smooth and quiet ride. When properly equipped, the Trailblazer has a maximum towing capacity of 1,000 pounds, perfect for hauling a small boat or trailer.

Across the 2021Chevrolet Equinox lineup, you’ll find a 1.5-liter four-cylinder 170-horsepower turbocharged engine giving 203 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission pairs with this engine. For a bit more power, choose the LT or Premier trim which has an optional 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. This engine mates with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

All Equinox trims come standard with front-wheel drive. You can also choose the available all-wheel-drive system which helps with traction on slippery roads or uneven terrain.

Front and rear stabilizer bars along with four-wheel independent suspension give the Equinox nimble handling. With the proper equipment, the Equinox can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Interior Space and Design

Both the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Equinox have two rows of seats that fit up to five people. The Trailblazer has a passenger volume of 98.2 cubic feet with plenty of legroom and headroom for everyone. You’ll find easy-to-clean cloth seats on the two lower trims of the Trailblazer, and available leatherette seat trims on the ACTIV and RS trims.  Add the Convenience Package to these two upper trims to get a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob as well as automatic climate control.

For a compact SUV, the 2021Trailblazer has a surprising amount of storage room. Depending on the seating configuration, you can get a maximum of 54.4 cubic feet of cargo space. The 40/60 split-folding rear bench seat and fold-flat front passenger seat lets you carry longer items.

The 2021 Equinox also has ample legroom and headroom with a passenger volume of 103.2 cubic feet. You’ll find cloth seats on the two lower trims, and leather upholstery on the LT and Premier. Luxurious available features include heated and ventilated front seats, driver’s seat memory settings, and with the Confidence and Convenience Package, the Equinox comes with a panoramic sunroof and dual-zone climate control.

Although classified as a compact SUV, the Chevrolet Equinox has a large amount of cargo space. Fold the rear seat flat and you get a massive 63.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which gives you plenty of room to carry golf clubs, a surfboard, or camping gear. Loading your supplies into the back of the Equinox is easy with the available hands-free gesture liftgate. As with the Trailblazer, the 40/60 split-folding rear bench seat in the Chevrolet Equinox lets you carry longer items.

Innovative Technology

All of the Trailblazer trims come with Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 system featuring a 7-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, as well as a four-speaker sound system. Add the Technology Package to your Trailblazer to get Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system, which comes standard on the LT and Premier trims. Available features include navigation, a wireless charging pad, and voice-activation for the infotainment system.

The Equinox has many of the same technology features as the Trailblazer, including the same infotainment system. However, Bluetooth and voice recognition come standard across the Equinox trims. Add the Infotainment II Package to the three upper trims to get navigation, HD radio, four USB ports, a 110-volt outlet, and an eight-speaker Bose sound system.

Safety and Driver-Assist Features

Both the Trailblazer and Equinox come with a host of standard and available driver-assist features including Teen Driver. Key standard safety features include forward-collision alert with automatic emergency braking and a rear vision camera. Add the Technology Package to the Trailblazer for features such as a lane mitigation system and adaptive cruise control. Advanced and available driver-assist features for both the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Equinox include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights.
